Winter Pipe Protection: Tips from Our Plumbers

When winter rolls into the Pacific Northwest, it's not just your thermostat that takes a hit, your plumbing does too. Frozen pipes can lead to burst lines, costly water damage, and a whole lot of stress.

That’s why our plumbing team at West Sound Comfort Systems put together a few essential tips to help you protect your home before the temperatures dip too low.

1. Keep a Consistent Indoor Temperature Even When You're Away

Don’t turn the heat off when you leave town. Even if you're gone for just a day or two, keeping your home at a consistent temperature, ideally above 55°F, ensures the pipes inside your walls and under your sinks stay warm enough to avoid freezing. It might seem like a small detail, but this one habit can prevent a major disaster.

2. Let Faucets Drip During Freezing Weather

If the forecast calls for below-freezing temps overnight, turn on your faucets just enough to let them drip. A slow, steady trickle keeps water moving through the pipes, which makes it much harder for ice to form. This is especially helpful for sinks along exterior walls or in drafty areas like laundry rooms or basements.

3. Insulate Pipes in Unheated Areas

Your attic, crawlspace, garage, and basement are all areas where pipes are most vulnerable to the cold. Installing foam pipe insulation—or even wrapping pipes with heat tape or towels—can help them retain heat and resist freezing. This small investment in insulation could save you thousands in repair bills later on.
