Why Your Water Heater Runs Out of Hot Water
Cold showers before everyone's had a turn? The cause usually isn't the size of your tank. Here's what's really going on.

It's usually not the tank size
When a water heater stops keeping up, homeowners assume they need a bigger tank. Sometimes that's true — but more often the real culprits are cheaper to fix.
The usual suspects
- Sediment buildup. Kitsap's water leaves mineral sediment in the bottom of the tank, which insulates the burner from the water and steals capacity. An annual flush often restores it.
- A failing dip tube. When the tube that sends cold water to the bottom breaks, cold and hot mix at the top — instant lukewarm showers.
- A worn lower heating element (electric tanks) or a struggling burner (gas).
- Undersized for a changed household. Added a soaking tub or a few teenagers? The tank that was fine five years ago may genuinely be too small now.
We'll diagnose the real cause before recommending a replacement — and if a tankless unit makes sense for endless hot water, we'll show you the math honestly. See water heater repair → · See water heater installation →
