5 Step Checklist for Another Pacific Northwest Winter
Prepare Your Home’s Heating & Plumbing Systems for the Cold Months Ahead
Here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, winter doesn't always hit with dramatic snowstorms, but the damp, chilly weather still takes a toll on your home’s systems. As the colder months roll in, now is the time to make sure your heating and plumbing are ready to handle what’s ahead.
At West Sound Comfort Systems, we know how important it is to stay warm, dry, and safe all season long. That’s why we’ve put together a quick 5-step checklist to help you winterize your home and avoid unnecessary headaches or costly repairs.
1. Schedule a Boiler or HVAC Inspection
Your heating system works hard in the winter, so it’s essential to make sure everything is running safely and efficiently. A professional inspection can catch any issues early— whether it’s a dirty filter, low pressure in your boiler, or a component nearing the end of its life.
Pro Tip: Scheduling early ensures you’re not stuck on a waiting list when everyone else’s heat goes out during the first cold snap.
2. Check Your Pipe Insulation
Frozen pipes are a real risk, especially in garages, crawlspaces, or anywhere pipes run through unheated areas. Adding or upgrading pipe insulation is a simple and affordable way to prevent pipes from freezing and potentially bursting when temperatures dip.
3. Look for Leaks Now
Even a tiny drip can cause big trouble if temperatures fall below freezing. Before winter sets in, walk around your home and check for leaks under sinks, around your water heater, and in crawlspaces. Catching and fixing leaks now can save you from serious water damage down the line.
4. Drain and Disconnect Outdoor Faucets
Leaving hoses attached and faucets pressurized during a freeze can cause the water inside to expand and crack your pipes. Be sure to disconnect all hoses and drain outdoor spigots. If you have a shut-off valve for exterior faucets, go ahead and turn that off too.
5. Locate Emergency Shut-Off Valves
In case of a burst pipe or gas leak, you need to act fast. Make sure everyone in your household knows where the emergency shut-off valves are for both water and gas. Quick action can prevent further damage and keep your home and family safe.
